Mabon Rituals & Celebrating Fall Equinox

As the rich hues of autumn spread across the fields, we are gently reminded of another turn in the Wheel of the Year.

Mabon, or the Autumn Equinox, is approaching, reaching its peak on September 22nd (or early on the 23rd, depending on your location in the Northern Hemisphere). This marks the second of the seasonal harvests, preceded by Lughnasadh and followed by Samhain.

Mabon offers the abundant gifts of Mother Earth, nourishing us for the darker months ahead. It’s a time to practice gratitude for abundance in all its forms. Mabon also signals a period of preparation for winter, inviting us to transition into a quieter, more feminine energy.

**For those residing in the Southern Hemisphere, the vibrant energies of Ostara, or the Spring Equinox, are now beckoning as you step into this blossoming season. Here is a post on Ostara.

Mabon Wisdom

The Equinoxes represent the perfect balance between light and dark, and Mabon marks the union of these opposing forces. It carries the transitional energy that leads us into the darker months, culminating at the Yule / Winter Solstice.

As we enter Libra season, the sign of balance and harmony, we are invited to welcome a sense of equilibrium and loving energy into our lives.

Journal Prompts for Mabon

I deeply value journaling for its power to bring clarity to what may feel clouded. Allow these questions to guide you gently, and if they resonate, feel free to add others that support your inner exploration.

  1. At this point in my journey, what fills me with gratitude?
  2. What are my body and spirit calling for as I prepare for the winter season?
  3. As the trees send their energy back to their roots, what in my life is asking for deeper grounding right now?

Rituals for Mabon

Here are some beautiful rituals crafted to nurture you and work with the season of Mabon and the equinox portal. If feel called, share your experiences with me in Instagram DMs. I love hearing about other’s journeys and insights are truly valued.

1. Creating Your Mabon Altar

As Mabon ushers in a season of gratitude and harvest, transform your sacred space with autumnal colors and symbols. Consider adding items that represent change, balance, and harmony. Light a candle and take a moment to reflect on the blessings and lessons of the past months. Write them on fallen leaves or natural paper, and offer them to the Earth as a gesture of gratitude for the abundance in your life. You can find a full list of colors and symbols for Mabon in this workbook.

2. Hosting a Mabon Feast

Prepare a feast with seasonal, local ingredients, and set your table with autumnal colors and decorations. Invite your loved ones to share in this abundant meal, encouraging them to bring a dish to create a communal celebration. Before eating, each person can take a moment to express gratitude for the nourishment and experiences of the past year. As you enjoy the feast, honor the balance of the season and the gifts it offers.

3. Gentle Mabon Meditation

On your sacred altar, light two candles—one white and one black, if possible. Take a few deep breaths into your belly, and gently reflect on the balance in your life. Embrace both the light and the dark within you. Before you start, you might like to pose a question or reflect on this prompt: Where in your life could you welcome more ease and harmony? Feel free to journal or free-write your thoughts and feelings.

4. Grounding in Nature

In reverence to nature's ever-changing tapestry, Mabon invites us to pause and connect with the earth. Consider visiting a nearby park, forest, or mountain, and let yourself be enveloped in nature's autumnal hues. If it's too chilly for barefoot exploration, gently place your hands on the ground or against a tree—perhaps even share a loving embrace. Breathe deeply, allowing the crisp, invigorating air to fill you. Offer your heartfelt gratitude to Mother Earth for her beauty and abundant blessings.
